Balboa Yacht Club

Member Application Overview

Balboa Yacht Club is first and foremost a boating club that also offers a wide range of social activities. Since the Club’s beginning in 1922, we have maintained a reputation as a strong contender in all sailing races and regattas.  The Club also has an active fleet of cruising sailors and many of the top anglers on the West Coast call BYC home.

At BYC there are several different memberships:
Racing Membership ~ serious sailboat racers (racing resume required)
Collegiate Membership ~ current students 16-24 who are active sailors
Junior Flag Membership ~ under 40 years of age. This is a step toward full Flag (equity) Membership.
Flag Membership ~ equity membership for those over 40 years of age.
Non Resident Membership ~ sailors that live outside of our area and are already members of a yacht clubs

We currently do have memberships at all levels available .

New members are encouraged to own a boat and have an ongoing interest in boating. All new members are expected to support our On-the-Water activities and to participate on one of our many Club Committees.

Balboa Yacht Club has a formal application process for prospective members and we are here to help you along the way.

The process for Membership is:

First -- You will need to be sponsored by two current Flag members – contact your BYC friends or call us for assistance.

Second -- Your sponsors will have a short meeting with a few members of the Membership Committee to discuss your interest in boating. .

Third:  Complete the application form which also requires two (2) BYC Sponsors and a minimum of three (3) personal character references, one of which must be a BYC member – all will need to write letters of recommendation for you.

Fourth: Once the completed application is received at BYC, the applicant’s name will be posted on both the Club’s bulletin board and website for 30 days.

Fifth: You will be invited to the next monthly Membership Committee meeting where your sponsors and you will share with us why you want to be a member of our Club.  The Membership Committee then makes its recommendation to the Board of Directors

Sixth; Membership approval is required by the BYC Board of Directors which meets monthly
