Program information

Learn to Sail – Level 1
Our Learn to Sail Level 1 is for complete beginners. Learn to Sail covers rigging, points of sail, basic boat handling, water safety, and seamanship. The overall goal is to help the sailor get comfortable sailing in varying conditions and becoming independent sailors. As the sailor gains more confidence sailing, they will advance to Learn to Race – Level 2.

Learn to Race – Level 2
Learn to Race Level 2 is for those sailors that have successfully completed Learn to Sail Level 1. In this class, the sailors will be introduced to the basics of sailboat racing. Specific skills include starting, racing the course, and flags. This level prepares sailors to move up to our Development Team who race in regattas.

Social Sailing
This class is an alternative to our racing pathway. It is for sailors that have completed Learn to Race but prefer not to race in Regattas. This program teaches sailing through fun games and focuses on overall seamanship. Sailors can stay in this group for as long as they need.

Singlehanded vs Doublehanded
Younger sailors from ages 8-12 learn in our singlehanded boats (Sabot, Optimist, and Open Skiffs). These are all small boats that are great for kids to learn in. Sailors ages 12-16 learn in doublehanded boats, sailing with 2 people in the boat. They will sail CFJs and Harbor 20s.

Personal boat vs BYC Club boat
If you have your own boat (Sabot, Optimist, Open Skiff, CFJ) you can pay for a storage spot and participate with the reduced fees. If you don't have a boat, you can use a BYC boat. For the singlehanded classes, we have BYC Sabots, Optimists, and Open Skiffs. For the doublehanded we have BYC CFJs and Harbor 20s.

Move Up Opportunities
We have made our programs fluid with plenty of opportunity for your sailor to compete a level and move up to the next level. If you are unsure of which program to sign up for (Learn to Sail v.s. Learn to Race v.s. Social Sailing) we will adjust your sailor’s class as needed. If they sign up for multiple camps and your sailor moves up a level during a camp that isn’t an issue. They will be moved groups.

Multiple sessions
You can register your sailors for more than one camp. If they progress up a level, they will be moved groups.
